MOAC
history
The Mid-Ohio Athletic
Conference was established in 1990 by ten Ohio high schools in Delaware,
Marion, Morrow, and Union Counties. The charter members were Delaware Buckeye
Valley, Cardington Lincoln, Marion Elgin, Sparta Highland, Mount Gilead,
Richwood North Union, Galion Northmor, Marion
Pleasant, Morral Ridgedale, and Caledonia River Valley. All the schools are
members of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA).
Since the inception of the MOAC, twelve sports have been recognized by the
schools as conference sports. The seven boys sports
include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, track, and
wrestling. The five girls sports are basketball,
cross country, softball, track, and volleyball. At least four schools in the
MOAC must participate in a sport for it to be recognized as a conference
sport. In Winter season, 2011, the conference started recognizing boys and
girls bowling as a league sport. In Fall season, 2013, boys
soccer was added as a league sport. In Fall season 2014, girls golf, girls tennis and girls soccer were added as league sports.
Girls and boys swimming were added in Winter season 2015 and boys’ tennis was
added in Spring season 2015. The League now recognizes 11 boys’ sports
and 10 girls’ sports.
The Blue and Red Divisions were established to divide the conference in half in order to put together the schools of similar size. The
Blue Division was Cardington, Mount Gilead, Northmor,
Pleasant, and Ridgedale. The Red Division schools were Buckeye Valley, Elgin,
Highland, North Union, and River Valley. The conference recognizes a champion
of each division/conference in each of the twenty-one sports. The School year of 2013 Pleasant moved to the Red Division and
Highland moved to the Blue Division. The same year Centerburg and
Fredericktown were added to the Blue Division with Fairbanks and Jonathan
Alder new in the Red Division. The school year of 2014 Ridgedale left the
MOAC. Elgin moved to the Blue Division and East Knox, was added to the Blue
Division. Galion, and Upper Sandusky (football only) joined the Red
Division. Marion Harding joined the Red Division for all other sports
and was added to Football in Fall Season 2015. Fairbanks left the MOAC at the
beginning of the 2016-17 school year to join the Ohio Heritage Conference in
all sports except Football. Fairbanks Football will move to the Ohio Heritage
Conference(OHC) in the fall of 2017.
Starting with the Fall of
2017 The MOAC was reduced to an 8 team Conference.
Jonathan Alder left to join the Central Buckeye Conference(CBC).
Elgin left to go to the Northwest Central Conference(NWCC).
Highland, Cardington, Northmor, Mount Gilead, East
Knox, Fredericktown, and Centerburg left to help form the Knox Morrow
Athletic Conference(KMAC). Ontario, Clear Fork
joined Pleasant, North Union, River Valley, Buckeye Valley, Galion, and
Marion Harding to form then 8 team MOAC for the 2017-18 school year.
The Fall of 2018 the MOAC
changed again. North Union left to play in the CBC, but
will play Football in the MOAC one more year. All other North Union Sports
will be played in the CBC. Shelby will join the league in all Sports except
Football. Shelby will play Football in the MOAC starting in the Fall of 2019.
The Fall of 2019 took on yet
another change. Buckeye Valley left the league to join the MSL. Shelby will
play Football starting 2019. The MOAC league is now at 7 teams.
Highland was voted in to
rejoin the MOAC in the Summer of 2020. Highland participated in Girls Golf in
2020, All Sports with the exception of Football in
2021 and Football starting with a MOAC schedule in the Fall of 2022.
In the fall of 2006, the league adopted a new tradition and started the MOAC
Awards Nights that are held at the end of each season. The Athlete of the
Year and Coach of the Year for each sport are awarded on those nights. To be
eligible for Athlete of the Year, you must make First Team All Conference. All head coaches are eligible for Coach
of the Year.
The
current commissioner of the conference is Bill Clauss. If you wish to
officiate games in the conference, please contact the commissioner.
